On Our Way!

Youth started arriving at the church at 9:50 this morning to head to Charlotte/Shelby NC.  By 10:15 the vans were completely loaded.  We took the picture seen here and pulled out by 10:20!  Every year the process for preparing to leave becomes more and more efficient.  It was smooth sailing all the way to Wytheville, VA where we are staying for the night.

During devotions tonight we spent time sharing our worries and concerns for the week.  Those who have been on a mission trip shared some advice for those who haven't been before. The scripture we focused on was "Be strong. Take courage.  Don't be intimidated.  Don't give them a second thought because God, your God, is striding ahead of you. He's right there with you.  He won't let you down; He won't leave you." - Deuteronomy 31:6.

No matter where we go, what we're doing, or what our plans are, He is already there.  He has been preparing work for each of us in our lives.  Its our job to respond and do the work He has prepared for us.

Work Day 3 - Finding Purpose

Today was a half day of work.....Yay!  As stated before we were all excited that today was only a half work day, we worked until lunch was delivered and then were off the rest of the day.  Even though we only worked for half the day it seems that we all worked extra hard to make up for it.  Today has also been the best day  in terms of weather, slightly overcast all day and cool (comparatively). Clarissa, Kacey, Andrew, Don, and Erik continued painting the rooms of their house.  In all they are painting 11-12 rooms/hallways in the house.  Isaiah and Colton worked hard painting the back side of the house with 3 coats of paint.  Tomorrow they plan on doing the front.  Colton shared that they very quickly painted over where the wasps used to live.  Deana and Katie continued roofing.  Katie shared the frustration of having to rip up a large portion on the back of the house because the shingles were going crooked.  They worked hard on the roof and think they will by done by lunch tomorrow,

Work Day 1 - Denial of the World

One day of work is done!  The weather cooperated enough for the crews to get a good amount done...it did rain at most work sites, one site had 3 inches in 2 hours, yet it was still very productive.  Most of the youth commented about how they really got to know their crew pretty well today and made more new friends.  Many of the youth spent the day scraping paint and putting on fresh paint, some inside a house and some are working on the exterior of a house.  Others spent the day scraping old shingles off a roof, repairing old damaged wood and putting down the underlay for the new shingles to add the rest of the week.  Andrew, Erik, Kacey, Don, and Clarissa shared that they are working on a house that is a shelter for kids in trouble, it helps keep the kids clean and safe and the kids even made lunch for them.  Katie shared that she had to save a neighborhood kid who got himself stuck in a fence and Isaiah and Colton had some time to get to know the neighborhood kids a little and even g

Deny, Take Up, Follow Me

Today was H.O.T.  Nearly every crew drank all of their water from the coolers and received multiple Popsicles to keep hydrated and cool(er).  Almost all crews have their first house nearly completed, most started another house today and then will finish both tomorrow.  8 crews will successfully complete 12 roofs in 1 week, many of which required large amounts of re-sheeting.  Our youth have really stepped up and worked hard this week, they've nailed, they've sweated, they've stank, they've shared, and they've loved.  Most importantly they have served.  Tomorrow is our final wrap up day to complete everything we started this week and we'll end with a big celebration tomorrow night.   One of the houses has a young boy named Avian who is 13 years old.  He is not in the best household situation with his parents, it's not the type of house you want to see a young boy raised in.  It is not a great household and it appears he doesn't have much positive influenc
